    • This dissertation attempts an in-depth analysis and evaluation of ELT materials currently used in the first two grades of three provincial state Lycea attuned to an array of principles and values incorporated in the relevant literature. It also attempts to shed light on the extent to which classroom implementation of the materials is being effective. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the teaching context including the English course on the curriculum, a brief profile of the learners and teachers, the role of materials in this context, a brief reference to the materials in use. Chapter 2 attempts to define “evaluation” and makes reference to its place in the present Lyceum context. It also describes a framework of conducting an informal materials-focused evaluation valid for the Greek Lyceum context. Chapter 3 begins with a reference to a small-case study designed to investigate the teachers’ procedures to selecting their instructional material and presents a brief description of the materials currently in use. The real implementation of these materials and the constraints intrinsic to the teaching situation are issues also discussed in this chapter. Chapter 4 attempts to define the criteria for a comprehensive evaluation of materials as they emerge from literature review. It focuses on establishing the criteria for applying a two-stage evaluation of materials: a theoretical evaluation of materials (i.e. the “workplan” approach) and an empirical evaluation of materials (i.e. “in process” evaluation). Chapter 5 applies the evaluation model to the specific materials and outlines in brief some of their deficient aspects. It also reflects on a small-scale study carried out as a collaborative teacher activity which provides useful information on how learners and teachers actually use the materials and respond to them. In the final chapter (Chapter 6) one deficient area is being discussed (i.e. Speaking Skills) and specific proposals (i.e. presenting a sample lesson) are put forward which will render the materials more oriented towards our learners’ needs. Most of the chapters thus aim to promote the role of evaluation as a means of profession
