    • Abstract

      Aim and Objectives

This thesis develops and implements a Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) workflow for the management of post-earthquake rehabilitation projects involving unreinforced masonry heritage structures, using the Church of Saint George in Agies Paraskies, Heraklion, Crete, which sustained significant damage during the 2021 Arkalochori earthquake, as a case study. The research is motivated by the observation that information generated during the assessment and rehabilitation of masonry buildings is typically dispersed among two-dimensional drawings, technical reports, and isolated datasets, resulting in limited interoperability and information traceability. Furthermore, BIM-based methodologies for historic masonry structures remain considerably less mature than those developed for reinforced concrete construction. The primary objective of this study is to establish and validate an integrated HBIM workflow capable of organizing, managing, and linking data derived from digital surveying, damage assessment, structural intervention planning, and cost estimation within a unified information environment, while complying with the applicable Greek regulatory framework (KADET, KANEPE, and DAEFK).

      Methodology

The proposed workflow comprises a sequence of interconnected stages. Geometric data acquisition was carried out through three-dimensional laser scanning using an (FJD Trion P1 SLAM scanner) and drone-based photogrammetry. The acquired data were processed in Autodesk ReCap to generate the geometric reference model, which was subsequently used for HBIM development in Autodesk Revit. Structural damage was systematically documented and coded within the model, enabling the assessment of the corresponding loss of load-bearing capacity. Quantity take-offs were then extracted through Revit Schedules and incorporated into a rehabilitation cost estimate following DAEFK specifications.

The structural assessment of both the existing and strengthened conditions was performed independently by the structural engineer using the 3Muri software package. The resulting analytical data were subsequently integrated into the HBIM environment to support the modelling and evaluation of the proposed strengthening interventions. In addition, the study investigates the potential interoperability between the HBIM model and structural analysis environments through the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard. Within the proposed framework, the HBIM model functions as a centralized information repository, ensuring data consistency, traceability, and continuity throughout all stages of the rehabilitation process.

      Case Study and Data

The investigated structure is a cross-in-square domed masonry church constructed in 1903. According to the Greek seismic hazard classification, the site is in Seismic Hazard Zone II (a = 0.24g) and belongs to Importance Class S3/III, leading to a design ground acceleration of ag = 0.48g under DAEFK provisions (ε = 0.12). Laboratory testing of masonry constituents yielded stone compressive strengths ranging between 4.1 and 39.5 MPa, with an average value of 16.03 MPa, an apparent density of approximately 2,000 kg/m³, and estimated masonry compressive strengths of fwc ≈ 1.95 MPa according to Spyrakos' methodology and fwc ≈ 2.51 MPa according to Eurocode 6 provisions. The geotechnical investigation determined an allowable bearing capacity of 150 kPa and classified the subsoil as Ground Type C.

The damage survey revealed a reduction in load-bearing capacity of φx = 0.33 (αx = 0.67) in the X-direction and φy = 0.41 (αy = 0.59) in the Y-direction, leading to the characterization of the damage as being of a general structural nature.

      Structural Assessment and Rehabilitation Measures

Structural assessment was performed through nonlinear static (pushover) analysis considering two seismic demand scenarios, namely the 1959 Greek Seismic Code and Eurocode 8, for both principal directions of structural response and targeting Performance Level B1. The existing structure was found incapable of satisfying the prescribed performance requirements, thereby necessitating structural strengthening.

The proposed rehabilitation strategy included deep repointing of masonry joints, grout injection techniques for masonry homogenization, application of an inorganic matrix composite reinforcement system (Geosteel Grid 400 and Geocalce F Antisismico, Kerakoll), installation of steel tie rods, and strengthening of the masonry vaults. The interventions resulted in a documented improvement of the mechanical properties of the masonry, achieving compressive strength values of fwc,f = 1.92 MPa and fwc,fII = 2.88 MPa, with a corresponding elastic modulus of Ewc,fII ≈ 1.10 GPa. The strengthened structure successfully met the target performance criteria. Quantities associated with the interventions were automatically extracted from the HBIM model and transferred to the standardized DAEFK cost estimation framework.

      Results and Discussion

The implementation of the proposed methodology demonstrated the capacity of HBIM to provide a unified three-dimensional environment for documentation, analysis, and management of rehabilitation projects involving historic masonry structures. The principal benefits identified include enhanced spatial representation of damage, improved information traceability, and direct integration between geometric data, quantity take-offs, and cost estimation procedures.

However, several limitations were identified. Photogrammetric data were incorporated into the workflow as a three-dimensional mesh(.fbx) rather than as a point cloud due to the unavailability of Autodesk ReCap Photo services for educational users. Furthermore, cracks located on curved vault surfaces could not be represented parametrically within the Revit environment and therefore required documentation through conventional two-dimensional drawings. Structural assessment remained dependent on an external analytical model developed by the structural engineer, while multiple data-transfer operations required manual intervention. Additionally, no quantitative comparison with conventional restoration documentation and management practices was undertaken.

      Conclusions

The findings demonstrate that the proposed HBIM workflow constitutes a feasible and transferable methodology for the rehabilitation management of earthquake-damaged masonry structures. The most mature and immediately applicable benefit of the approach lies in the integration of the digital model with quantity surveying and cost estimation processes. Moreover, the direct transition from a damage-informed HBIM model to structural analysis environments is identified as a promising direction for future development.

Further research should focus on the automation of data exchanges between software platforms, the parametric representation of damage on complex curved geometries, quantitative comparisons with conventional methodologies, and the development of comprehensive BIM-based platforms for the management of post-earthquake rehabilitation projects.
