    • This dissertation explores the issue of overtourism and its impacts on popular tourist destinations, with a particular focus on the Prefecture of Chania in Crete. As a region of exceptional natural beauty and cultural significance, the perfecture of Chania has experienced a significant rise in visitor numbers in recent years. Although tourism is a cornerstone of the local economy, it has also contributed to environmental degradation, infrastructure strain, and the deterioration of iconic sites and landmarks that form an essential part of the region’s natural and cultural heritage. The study is based on data analysis derived from questionnaires completed by visitors, as well as information gathered from permanent residents and local stakeholders, ensuring a balanced perspective. In addition, relevant local and European literature and studies will be used. The main objective is to record the effects of overtourism and to highlight sustainable strategies that will contribute to the preservation of local identity and the protection of the region's natural and cultural wealth.
