This study seeks to discover the views and attitudes held by teachers and parents of
migrant students attending the generic classes of the Greek school regarding the use of
L1. Moreover, the current research aims to investigate the methods employed by
educators in multicultural classrooms, as well as to examine their opinions towards the
use of students' first languages (L1) during the educational procedure. For this reason,
six (6) semi-structured interviews with generic classes' educators in a public primary
school in a small town in Greece, were accomplished. All interviewees were teachers
who work with both Greek and migrant learners in their classes. Furthermore, they were
asked to share the teaching methods they use in the classroom and describe their
cooperation status with the parents of the students. Additionally, a focus group
discussion was conducted with parents of migrant students attending the same classes.
In total 5 (five) parents participated and shared their views on the use of L1 at home
and at school as well as their experience in collaborating with the Greek school officials.
Although the importance of maintaining L1 was highlighted by all participants,
confusion emerged on the ways L1 can be preserved and included in the learning
process and everyday life. -
