Αντικείμενο της παρούσας εργασίας που εκπονείται στο πλαίσιο του Μεταπτυχιακού Προγράμματος της Δημιουργικής Γραφής αποτελεί το πολύπλοκο φαινόμενο των fake news στο ευρωπαϊκό περιβάλλον. Η έρευνα επικεντρώνεται στους πρώιμους «μηχανισμούς» παραπληροφόρησης και την εξέλιξή τους παράλληλα με την πρόοδο της τεχνολογίας. Εστιάζει στη διαφοροποίηση του ορισμού της «είδησης» όταν ακολουθείται από τη λέξη fake. Διερευνά τη «μετάλλαξη» της παραπληροφόρησης στο σύγχρονο ψηφιακό οικοσύστημα των Μέσων Κοινωνικής Δικτύωσης και αναφέρεται διεξοδικά στον τρόπο παραγωγής των fake news, στη «γλώσσα» που μετέρχονται για να είναι πετυχημένα, καθώς και στα κίνητρα των ενορχηστρωτών της. Παράλληλα, αναδεικνύει την άρρηκτη σχέση τους με τις προκαταλήψεις και εξετάζει τις διαφορετικές προσεγγίσεις του αμφιλεγόμενου όρου και τη σύγχυση που προκαλεί η αδυναμία του να σημασιοδοτήσει τα fake news και όλες τις εκφάνσεις της «πληροφοριακής αταξίας». Οι πολιτικές αντιμετώπισης σε επίπεδο νομοθεσίας, εκπαίδευσης, ελέγχου και διασταύρωσης αποτελούν ξεχωριστή ενότητα. Σε αυτή γίνεται εκτενής αναφορά στο Σχέδιο Δράσης που έχει εκπονήσει η Κομισιόν για την καταπολέμηση της παραπληροφόρησης, στα μέτρα που έχουν λάβει οι μεγάλες πλατφόρμες κοινωνικής δικτύωσης για να κλείσουν την «κάνουλα» της παραπληροφόρησης και σε όσα οφείλουν να πράξουν οι δημοσιογράφοι για να διασφαλίσουν το έργο τους και τελικά τη δημοκρατία.

Στο πλαίσιο της έρευνας αξιοποιήθηκε συναφής διεθνής και ξένη βιβλιογραφία, ερευνητικά δεδομένα έγκυρων φορέων, δημοσιευμένες μελέτες, νομοθεσίες, αποφάσεις του ευρωκοινοβουλίου και αρθρογραφία από τον ξένο και τον εγχώριο Τύπο.

This dissertation was developed for the Creative Writing Master’s Degree Program and its main object of analysis is the intricate phenomenon of fake news in the European context. The research focuses on the early “mechanisms” of misinformation/ disinformation and their evolution that has taken place alongside modern technologies. The paper’s objective is to highlight the differentiation that accompanies the term “news” when it follows the word fake. Moreover, the so called “mutation” of misinformation/ disinformation is being explored throughout the paper within the contemporary digital ecosystem that is Social Media. This dissertation thoroughly articulates the means that are employed in order to produce fake news and more specifically the use of “language” that renders it successful, as well as the motives of their creators. The paper highlights the inseparable link between fake news and prejudices. What is more, different approaches of the controversial and puzzling definition of fake news have been examined here, as well as the term’s inability to encapsulate all the information disorder’s aspects and manifestations.

Policy making regarding legislation, education, regulation, and verification that aim to tackle fake news constitute a separate segment of the dissertation. This section refers extensively to the Action Plan of the European Commission to prevent misinformation/ disinformation, it also includes the measures that social media platforms have undertaken in order to block the spread of fake news  and lastly it refers to the obligations that journalists need to adhere to so that their work and democratic practices are secured.  

The literature that has shaped this research includes an international body of work that is relevant to the subject, data deriving from valid sources, published papers, legislation regarding fake news, decisions and policies of the European Parliament and articles from the foreign and greek press.
