Η γλώσσα διακρίνεται για την ετερογένειά της, μία όψη της οποίας είναι και η ποικιλία σε γεωγραφικό επίπεδο. Η Κάλυμνος διακρίνεται για το ιδίωμά της, το οποίο αφενός μοιράζεται στοιχεία με τα ιδιώματα των υπόλοιπων νησιών της Δωδεκανήσου, αφετέρου έχει κάποια ιδιαίτερα φαινόμενα. Το Αρχείο της Δημογεροντίας Καλύμνου αποτυπώνει τη γλωσσική κατάσταση του νησιού του 19ου αιώνα και των αρχών του 20ου, τουλάχιστον σε επίπεδο γραπτού λόγου. Μέσα από τη μελέτη ποικίλων εγγράφων (1802-1936) σε αυτόγραφη μορφή και ύστερα από μεταγραφή τους, εντοπίζονται στοιχεία του ιδιώματος σε όλα τα επίπεδα γλωσσικής ανάλυσης. Κάποια επιβεβαιώνονται από τη βιβλιογραφία, κάποια αποσιωπούνται και ελάχιστα είναι εντελώς πρωτότυπα. Η μη παγίωση ορισμένων τύπων και η συνεχής εναλλαγή τους ερμηνεύεται μέσα από το φαινόμενο της διγλωσσίας, ενώ το εκάστοτε κειμενικό είδος συνδέεται με συγκεκριμένα επίπεδα ύφους. Το ύφος διαμορφώνεται τόσο από τις λεξικογραμματικές επιλογές του πομπού, αλλά και από τις απατήσεις του κάθε κειμένου.
The language is distinguished by its heterogeneity, one aspect of which is its geographical diversity. Kalymnos is distinguished by its idiom (acrolect), which on the one hand shares elements with the idioms of the other islands of the Dodecanese, and on the other hand has some particular phenomena. The archive of the Kalymnos Council of Elders (Demogerontia) reflects the linguistic situation on the island in the 19th century and the early 20th century, at least at the level of written language. Through the study of various documents (1802-1936) in autograph form and after their transcription, elements of the idiom are identified at all levels of linguistic analysis. Some are confirmed by the literature, some are concealed and very few are completely original. The non-consolidation of certain forms and their constant alternation is interpreted through the phenomenon of diglossia, while each genre is associated with specific levels of style. Style is shaped both by the lexicogrammatical choices of the transmitter and by the demands of each text.
