Η παρούσα μεταπτυχιακή εργασία εκπονήθηκε στο πλαίσιο του μεταπτυχιακού προγράμματος Δημόσιας Ιστορίας του Ελληνικού Ανοικτού Πανεπιστημίου. Εξετάζονται οι έννοιες της μνήμης και της εθνικής ταυτότητας αρχικά σε θεωρητικό επίπεδο, μέσα από κοινωνιολογικές και ανθρωπολογικές θεωρήσεις. Η εξέτασή τους γίνεται και μέσα από την πρακτική αξιοποίηση των δύο αυτών εννοιών- και των προεκτάσεών τους- στην αρχαία Ολυμπία, περιοχή με πλούσιο ιστορικό γίγνεσθαι, συνδεδεμένο κατά κύριο λόγο με τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της εργασίας είναι ο απόηχος, λοιπόν, αυτών των εννοιών στην Ολυμπία του σήμερα και στο πως το μέρος και το παρελθόν αξιοποιείται για κοινωνικούς, πολιτικούς, πολιτισμικούς και κυρίως τουριστικούς-οικονομικούς λόγους. Εξετάζεται η σύγχρονη αρθρογραφία, κυρίως βάσει των τοπικών εφημερίδων, ενώ στο τέλος παρατίθεται και συνέντευξη μέλους της αρχαιολογικής υπηρεσίας του τόπου. Παράλληλα, αξιοποιείται πλούσιο εικονογραφικό υλικό προς επίρρωση όσων ερευνήθηκαν.
The current paper was devised during the Master programme in Public History of the Hellenic Open University. The meanings of memory and national identity are examined initially at a theoretical level, through the sociological and anthropological point of view. At this point, we are interested in the concept of collective and cultural memory. Their examination is also through the practical utilization of these two concepts - and their extensions - in ancient Olympia, a region with a rich historical life, mainly connected with the Olympic Games. The major part of the thesis is the echo, then, of these concepts in Olympia today and how the place and the past is exploited for social, political, cultural and, above all, tourist-economical reasons.
After an outline of the basic theoretical assumptions about memory, history and their relation to national identity, based on contemporary literature, and a brief overview of the site of ancient Olympia, the research focuses on the articles through local papers. Contemporary articles are examined, derived mainly from local newspapers of Ilia, which give the stigma of the place. It was found that the articles are based on specific axes which a) promote the Olympic ideals and link them with modern Greek national and cultural characteristics, b) set them as reasons for the dissemination of the Olympic ideas as proposed ways of modern life at a global level, c) make political use of the Olympic ideals, as the reference to them promotes the persons rather than the ideals themselves, d) relate ancient sport with its modern manifestations in Greece.
At the end, an interview with a member of the archaeological service of the area is also included. At the same time, abundant iconographic material is used to corroborate what has been researched
