In 1993 the Greek State introduced English as a foreign language in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades of Primary Schools due to political, pedagogical and social needs. In 2003 English was introduced in the third grade as well, in order to sensitize the young learners to the use of another code of communication besides their mother tongue. It is thought that this sensitization can happen earlier and it is possible for very young learners of the first and second grades of State Primary Schools to be taught English if appropriate methodological approaches are implemented. This dissertation focuses on why and how English can be taught to young learners aged six or seven years old and an appropriate framework is justified and exemplified. Research was conducted among parents, teachers of English and other educators both in Greece and in Belgium in order to gather and evaluate the opinions of professionals and parents on the issue of learning English from a very early age. A topic-based framework is introduced accompanied with the design of lessons that rely on the four skills. In the conclusions, suggestions are made for further research on the topic.
