Abstract
The concept of old age changed dramatically in the late 20th century as more and more people lived. As a result, researchers now distinguish between "third age" and "fourth age" (Baltes & Smith, 2003). In gerontology, the last stage of a person's life is often referred to as the "fourth age" (Koss & Ekerdt, 2016), which is characterized by functional decline and increased dependence. Old age, with the onset of retirement, is considered a period of relatively good health, with opportunities for active social engagement that form a solid foundation for healthy aging (Robinson, 2013). Although old age has a positive outlook on it, it may face some challenges that are specific to this period of life. Retirement itself (Daatland & Solem, 1995) can have a negative impact on the retirement's well-being (Wang, 2007). Studies of the effects of retirement on the well-being of the individual have shown that between 9-25% have a negative impact on their well-being after retirement (Wang, 2007; Pinquart & Schindler, 2007). In their recent review, Wang and Shi (2014) identified a number of factors before, during, and after retirement that affected retirees' well-being. The negative factors were poor health, involuntary retirement, concerns about maintaining social status and contacts, and strong identification with the job role (Wang & Shi, 2014). Promoting health can help retirees find a suitable place in society and improve their well-being despite these negative factors. In addition, health promotion will prolong this third age period and therefore possibly reduce morbidity during the fourth age period (Whitehead, 2011). Whitehead (2011) also suggests that in the fourth age individuals can turn to existential forces to overcome adversity, forces created in earlier stages of life, including the elderly. Health promotion is usually aimed at large populations and may not be able to address individual differences. The elderly population, however, is characterized by enormous heterogeneity (George, 2011; Wang, 2007) and many seniors have acquired a unique professional ability, a specific lifestyle and a network that unites two or three generations of family and friends. Ideally, health promotion should be tailored to the individual needs of each individual. However, the heterogeneity of the population makes this impossible.
Purpose
To investigate the role of physical activity in the elderly as well as the beneficial effect it has on the aging process by contributing to the functional enhancement of their way (quality) of life.
Method
The literature review was based on a search of the pub med database. Free research articles on humans, foreign language literature from 2010 onwards were searched.
Results
The aging process is characterized by reduced physiological changes in almost all organs and systems of the body which have a direct and indirect effect on the functionality of the elderly. Physical activity contributes and can reverse as a means of prevention the reduction of functional changes of aging by acting effectively and bringing about improvement in the function of the cardiorespiratory system, musculoskeletal system, susceptibility and balance, lipid profile and their psychosocial, autonomy in their daily activities, leading them to a prosperous aging and better quality of life.
