The preservation of global Cultural Heritage (CH) depends critically on understanding the long-term performance and susceptibility of historic building materials to environmental stressors, particularly those exacerbated by climate change. This thesis addresses this need by establishing a comprehensive, machine learning (ML)-ready database that systematically links material properties to observed deterioration.
The purpose of the thesis is two-fold; it involves a thorough literature survey concerning studies of cultural heritage building materials, including their physico-chemical and thermo-mechanical properties, and their performance, both in their present state and under accelerating weathering tests, such as salt crystallization or freeze-thaw cycles. The scope of this survey is to develop a database for heritage materials such as ancient stone, ceramics, mortars, and ultimately enrich and incorporate additional features to the database development efforts of the Ceramics and Composite Materials Research Laboratory (CCM) at N.C.S.R. "Demokritos". The key expected result is for this database to be able to be used for training machine learning models in future projects in order to adjust and complement missing features and ultimately predict the performance and deterioration of heritage building and conservation materials in different climate scenarios. The prediction of performance and deterioration ultimately aims for the most suitable preservation measures to be employed in order to mitigate the critical effects of climate change on the world’s heritage fabric.
The methodology begins with a literature survey for collecting data on CH building materials performance and deterioration under specific environmental conditions by collecting data from accelerating weathering tests. The overall methodology involves the creation or "buildup" of a database which comprises both existing and newly collected literature data. This database structure then facilitates the subsequent methodological step: using the collected data to train machine learning models for predictive purposes. -
