In this thesis, a bibliographic research at both local and international level for the current methodologies available in the field of light bulb recycling is carried out. Moreover, the methods and materials recovered from various types of lamps, as well as the areas in which these materials can be reused, are presented in detail. There is also a historical overview and analysis of the current lamp recycling regime in Greece, focusing on the legislative framework, the collection, transportation and recycling procedures, as well as on the types of materials recovered, their recovery methods, and their reuse possibilities.
Furthermore, the dissertation references the corresponding practices implemented in foreign countries, with an emphasis on those of the European Union’s. A comparative evaluation of data from foreign countries in relation to Greece is conducted, aiming to explore the development of new methodologies, both in recycling and reuse the evolution and enhancement of the existing legislative framework, and the opening of new markets. Based on the statistical data from the research, an analysis on the benefits of lamp recycling both on environmental and economic level is carried out.
An assessment of the percentage recycled in relation to that used in the domestic market, based on the most available data, is made. Moreover, the evolution of these percentages in previous years, as well as all the trends and prospects for their improvement in the future is examined. For Greece, based on data for the period 2019 -2021, where the categorization of EEE has changed and affected the comparison with previous periods (up to 2018), the PoM quantities of lamps are approximately 3100 tn annually, the collection quantities around 500 tn,, the processing quantities around 440-490 tn, while the recovered quantities around 420-440 tn.
The main recovered materials are glass and aluminum, while plastic shows increasing trends which lately ranks second after glass in recovered materials. This is largely related to the change in the types of lamps widely used in recent years compared to the past. Based on the conclusions drawn from this thesis, lamp recycling has shown improvement in recent years but there is enough space for further development, the basis of which should initially focus on both the collection quantities and those of the recovered materials. In order to implement all these, more emphasis should be placed on strengthening the collection system-network, on public awareness as well as on the tightening and the efficient application of the legislation.
