Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία εξετάζει τις αλλαγές και τις νέες τάσεις που διαμορφώνονται στο αμερικανικό μιούζικαλ του 21ου αιώνα, σε συνάρτηση με τις κοινωνικοπολιτικές εξελίξεις και τις τεχνολογικές μεταβολές. Στόχος της έρευνας είναι να αναδείξει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο το μιούζικαλ μεταβάλλεται τόσο θεματικά όσο και αισθητικά, αντανακλώντας τις εξελίξεις των πρώτων 25 χρόνων του 21ου αιώνα.
Αρχικά, παρουσιάζεται συνοπτικά η ιστορική πορεία του αμερικανικού μιούζικαλ κατά τον 20ό αιώνα, προκειμένου να κατανοηθεί το πλαίσιο μέσα στο οποίο αναπτύσσονται οι σύγχρονες μορφές του είδους. Στη συνέχεια, εξετάζεται η κοινωνικοπολιτική μετάβαση του 21ου αιώνα και η επίδρασή της στη θεματολογία των μιούζικαλ, με έμφαση στη διεύρυνση των θεματικών και στη μετατόπιση προς πιο ρεαλιστικές και πολυδιάστατες αφηγήσεις. Θέματα όπως η ταυτότητα, η ψυχική υγεία, η πολιτισμική συμπερίληψη και η επαναπροσέγγιση της ιστορίας αποκτούν κεντρικό ρόλο. Ιδιαίτερη σημασία δίνεται στις νέες αφηγηματικές προσεγγίσεις και σε μουσικά είδη που υιοθετούν τα νέα μιούζικαλ. Μέσα από χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα, όπως τα Hadestown, SIX the Musical, In the Heights και Hamilton, αναλύεται η χρήση διαφορετικών μουσικών ιδιωμάτων, ο πειραματισμός με τη μορφή και η σύνδεση του παρελθόντος με σύγχρονες πολιτισμικές αναφορές.
Τέλος, η εργασία εξετάζει τον ρόλο της τεχνολογίας και των μέσων κοινωνικής δικτύωσης στη διάδοση και δημιουργία των μιούζικαλ, καθώς και τις αλλαγές που προκάλεσε η πανδημία COVID-19 στον τρόπο παραγωγής και παρουσίασης. Συνολικά, η έρευνα αναδεικνύει το αμερικανικό μιούζικαλ του 21ου αιώνα ως ένα ζωντανό και διαρκώς εξελισσόμενο καλλιτεχνικό πεδίο, στενά συνδεδεμένο με τις κοινωνικές και πολιτισμικές εξελίξεις της εποχής του.
This thesis examines the changes and emerging trends in 21st-century American musical theater relative to sociopolitical developments and technological changes. The aim of this research is to highlight the ways in which musicals evolved both in their themes and their aesthetics, reflecting the developments in the first 25 years of the 21st century.
Initially, there is a brief synopsis of the history of American musical theater in the 20th century to provide the context within which contemporary forms of the genre develop. Subsequently, there is an examination of the sociopolitical transition of the 21st century and its impact on the themes of musicals, with emphasis on the expansion of themes and the shift toward more realistic and layered narratives. Themes such as identity, mental health, cultural inclusion, and the reassessment of history take a significant role. Attention is given to new narrative techniques and musical genres adopted by contemporary musicals. Through representative examples such as Hadestown, SIX the Musical, In the Heights, and Hamilton, the use of diverse musical idioms, experimentation with form, and the connection between past and contemporary cultural references are analyzed.
Finally, this thesis explores the role of technology and social media in the spread and reception of musicals, as well as the changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, in production and performance practices. Overall, the research presents 21st-century American musical theater as a dynamic and continuously evolving artistic field, closely linked to the social and cultural developments of its time.
