    • In an era of unprecedented globalization and growth, the corporate international food supply chains are tormented by the pathologies of agribusiness and complex socioeconomic dynamics, where human- and labor rights violations are the reality for the bottom tiers who live in poverty, and under the constant risk of slavery, forced, unpaid, hazardous and/or child labor amongst other abuses. Despite the voluntary global efforts of companies, organizations, and governments, progress on the topic has stalled. This thesis investigates the status quo in the cocoa and palm oil sectors - two of the highest risk commodities- identifies the current practices by the most influential actors in the supply chain, pinpoints the challenges, and seeks to compare them with a best-in-class approach case, a company that has a proven record in efficiently battling against these issues. It also seeks to understand what effect such strategies can have on a company’s performance. The status and gap analysis on strategy, governance, processes, and sourcing and procurement practices feed into a holistic model proposition that the corporations in the field can adopt in order to make a difference for the most impacted players of the chains. Finally, future research is recommended on how to quantify this qualitative study and turn it into an applied proposition for the food industry.
