The pharmaceutical industry has been going through a significant digital transformation which is fuelled by technological advancements that are also considered to be disruptive, such as the Metaverse and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This dissertation aims to review, in detail, the available literature on the current and potential future applications, trends, and the issues that arise out of the integration of such technologies in the pharmaceutical sector.

The rise of the Metaverse, a virtual shared space that blends enhanced physical reality with virtual worlds, brings exciting opportunities for the pharmaceutical industry. This review explores how the Metaverse can revolutionize drug discovery, clinical trials, medical education, and patient engagement. Moreover, Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have the potential to make pharmaceutical research and development more efficient. Looking at the research, it is clear that AI can speed up drug discovery, improve how clinical trials are designed, customize medicine for individuals, better manage the supply chain, and enhance pharmacovigilance. But while there are opportunities, this review also points out the ethical, regulatory, and societal challenges that come up by using AI and Metaverse in the pharmaceutical industry and also explores what we might expect in the future and what potential problems could come up.

The aim of this literature review is to explore how the use of Metaverse and AI is reshaping the pharmaceutical industry, by pinpointing present uses, upcoming trends, and possible concerns. Additionally, the research can offer valuable  information to  readers and pharmaceutical professionals about the possibilities and obstacles in this dynamic field.

Η φαρμακευτική βιομηχανία βρίσκεται σε μια σημαντική διαδικασία ψηφιακού μετασχηματισμού, η οποία τροφοδοτείται από τις τεχνολογικές εξελίξεις που επίσης θεωρούνται ως “διαταρακτικές”, όπως το Μετασύμπαν και η Τεχνητή Νοημοσύνη (ΤΝ). Αυτή η διατριβή στοχεύει στη λεπτομερή ανασκόπηση της διαθέσιμης βιβλιογραφίας σχετικά με τις τρέχουσες και τις πιθανές μελλοντικές εφαρμογές, τις τάσεις και τα προβλήματα που ανακύπτουν από την ενσωμάτωση τέτοιων τεχνολογιών στον φαρμακευτικό τομέα.

Η αυξανόμενη χρήση του Μετασύμπαντος, ενός εικονικού κοινόχρηστου χώρου που συνδυάζει την ενισχυμένη φυσική πραγματικότητα με εικονικούς κόσμους, αποφέρει συναρπαστικές ευκαιρίες για τη φαρμακευτική βιομηχανία. Αυτή η ανασκόπηση εξετάζει πώς το Μετασύμπαν μπορεί να επανασχεδιάσει την ανακάλυψη φαρμάκων, τις κλινικές δοκιμές, την ιατρική εκπαίδευση και την ενεργότερη συμμετοχή των ασθενών. Επιπλέον, οι τεχνολογίες Τεχνητής Νοημοσύνης (ΤΝ) έχουν τη δυνατότητα να καταστήσουν τη διαδικασία έρευνας και ανάπτυξης του φαρμακευτικού κλάδου πιο αποτελεσματική. Μέσω της βιβλιογραφικής ανασκόπησης, φαίνεται ότι η ΤΝ μπορεί να επιταχύνει την ανακάλυψη φαρμάκων, να βελτιώσει τον τρόπο σχεδιασμού κλινικών δοκιμών, να εξατομικεύσει τη φαρμακευτική θεραπεία στους ασθενείς, να διαχειριστεί καλύτερα την εφοδιαστική αλυσίδα και να βελτιώσει τη φάρμακο-επαγρύπνηση. Παρά το γεγονός ότι υπάρχουν ευκαιρίες, αυτή η ανασκόπηση επισημαίνει επίσης τις ηθικές, ρυθμιστικές και κοινωνικές προκλήσεις που συνδέονται με τη χρήση της ΤΝ και του Μετασύμπαντος στη φαρμακευτική βιομηχανία και εξετάζει επίσης τί μπορούμε να αναμένουμε στο μέλλον και ποια προβλήματα μπορεί να προκύψουν.
