The pedagogy of multilingual literacies is linked to the use of multimodal language learning tools, as well as the dissemination of new literacies in language teaching and education. In the context of conducting qualitative research on the importance and role of multilingual literacy in the language education of Greek as a second language, questionnaires were given to teachers of Greek as a second language through the platform maintained on social networks by the Association of Teachers of Greek as a Second / Foreign Language. The teachers’ answers formed the material for evaluation and processing based on the qualitative research methodology, as the research focuses on one hand on social and cultural issues, such as the language education of immigrants and refugees, on the other hand it indicates the individualized answers and observations of the teachers, which come from their personal teaching experience and reflect personal opinions. Therefore, the individual experiences, personal observations, and experiences of teachers from the use of multilingual literacy models, the exploitation of new literacies through multimodality and digital technology were assessed based on the theoretical framework of new literacies and multilingual literacy, to draw more general conclusions about the role of multilingual literacy and the opportunities it offers in the context of language teaching for refugees and immigrants. Particularly, the processing of the data and the evaluation of the findings highlighted the importance of the cross-linguistic approach and multilingual literacy for the progress and performance of immigrant and refugee learners, as it offers the opportunity to integrate them into the learning process and enhances their sense of security and self – confidence through the recognition and promotion of their individual and community cultural and linguistic identity. Hence, the research findings lead to the notion that language education is intertwined with the culture, mindset and experiences of immigrants and refugees in the host country. In addition to, the use of multilingual literacy and multimodal means of communication transforms school classrooms into multicultural and multilingual hotbeds, where language is approached in relation to people’s social, historical, and political contexts.
