The Bible and the witness of the Orthodox Church in the Fotis Kontoglou's writing work (Αγγλική) | The Bible and the witness of the Orthodox Church in the Fotis Kontoglou's writing work (Αγγλική)
This research work systematically studies the diverse bibliography of Fotis Kontoglou and especially his hagiological texts. The research focuses on his choices, in order to be shown the evidence of Orthodoxy, through the timelessness of its truths, in key questions of modern times. Although Kontoglou’s prose does not continue the work of Alexandros Papadiamantis ―such an issue would be misleading― however, his articles have great significance: a litterateur assumes the role of a catechist that is he undertakes, with simple expressive means, to initiate the reader to the orthodox doctrine.
The main key concepts of this research work are the following: Experienced faith· Divine triadness· Anthropological model· Patristic Tradition· Art as a knowledge of God.
As the introduction holds, in addition, the clarifying part of the research work, the necessary biographical and bibliographical elements of Kontoglou are given here, from the ones the comprehension of the orthodox Tradition and its exploitation in his personal experience and in his artistic and literary work are highlighted.
The first chapter examines the way in which Kontoglou’s articles, by expanding the pedagogical option of Orthodoxy, put forward the triadness of God, by making the man, through liberty and love, a person with ontological content, offering to make his life meaningful. In particular, the character of the divine punishment is being under review, the question of how far can somebody recognize God and the divine gloom as man’s protector in the future life.
In the second chapter, by giving prominence to Christ’s life as the fundamental anthropological model, Kontoglou’s perception of the route to the triumphant Church is being examined, and as a presumption the nodal text «Bedew your soul» is analysed. Next, the relevance of the mystery of the Cross and the Resurrection is examined through the eschatological perspective, by giving, on the one hand, a foretaste of the future life and on the other hand, by placing the Eschata towards History. Reference is made to the position of Theotokos in Orthodoxy and in cases of poems having as subject the Dormition.
In the third chapter, the eschatology of the patristic Tradition is examined as an experienced holiness and the achievement of theosis through the exercise is thoroughly developed. Then, Kontoglou’s view on the poems of Ptochoprodromos and their author is examined. Afterwards, the paradoxical testimony of holiness is described: the fools for Christ, with main reference to the personality of Blaise Pascal. As a supplement, the paradoxical face of a fool for Christ from the prose pieces of Kontoglou is detached and described.
In the fourth chapter, by identifying the joy and sadness as an attitude to life, it is analysed the way in which the hymns and prayers of the Orthodox Church and the hagiography of the holy churches make the arts, not only an integral expression of the man, capable of impressing and interpreting the continuous earthly «presence» of Christ, but also as a means οf revelation of the knowledge of God.
Evidence results reasonably and not reductively, exclusively from the study of Kontoglou’s work. The research ends up to the interpretative classification of the data and the synthetic performance of the conclusions as to their practical value in the field of correlation of dogmatic with art, civilization and everyday life in terms of common interest. Having these concerns, we seek the interpretative ability and the way out, being provided by the orthodox doctrine so that the rational being becomes a believer.
