• Purpose: the aim of this study is to determine the difficulties associated with the vision and quality of life of patients with cataracts in their daily life, before and after Phacoemulsification surgery, using the CatQuest-9SF questionnaire at the ophthalmology clinic of the General Hospital of Messinia, Nursing Unit of Kalamata. The main goal is to improve visual acuity and therefore visual function, resulting in improvements in the quality of life of patients. Material and method: the survey was conducted from 12-12-2019 to 17-6-2020. The criteria for inclusion in the survey were patients adults over 18 years of age with a diagnosis of bilateral and unilateral cataract. Patients from the surgery list, completed the translated CatQuest-9SF questionnaire before cataract surgery and postoperative. Data collected from patients were entered in the statistical program S.P.S.S. 25. Results: 70 preoperative and 64 postoperative questionnaires were completed and included in the analysis. The majority of the sample (59.4%) were men. The average age of the sample was 73.28 ±6.8 years. 22 of the patients had performed cataract surgery on the other eye. 54.7% of patients had left eye surgery and 45.3% had right eye surgery. Postoperative observed significant improvement of visual acuity, myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism and reduction of intraocular pressure. According to the Cronbach index a the questionnaire demonstrated good reliability a=0.881. In comparison before and after the operation, significant improvement was observed postoperative in all subjects of the questionnaire. A similar significant improvement was found in associations between Catquest-9SF, visual acuity and cataract classification, while no statistically significant difference was found between glaucoma and questionnaire. Conclusions: in this survey and in this patient sample, the benefits of cataract surgery were recorded by improving the visual function of the operated eye, improved activities and vision based on the results and associations of the questionnaire, resulting in improved quality of life of patients associated with vision and makes a person autonomous and able to cope with his daily habits. However, comparing the questionnaire with other studies it was found that due to the small sample of Patient Participation and mainly different demographic and clinical data, further investigation of a larger sample and additional associations that will lead to the realization of the relevant conclusions is needed.
