    • The role of the project manager to a project success is widely recognized as considerably important. In the case of breakthrough innovative project, this role is even more vital due to the many challenges that breakthrough innovation entails. It is also well acknowledged that the efficiency and effectiveness of the project manager is quite influenced by the context he/she is working in; according to the literature, the public-sector environment appears to have certain diversified characteristics in comparison to private sector that make project management context-dependent. Moreover, the business environment of private organizations involves a number of tough demands from the managers dealing with such projects, fact that it is not always the case with the public sector. However, this specific research area lacks adequate context-specific empirical data, in particular in Greece. This dissertation attempts to provide a better understanding of the role of project manager in breakthrough innovation process by investigating the way that managers and employees perceive the relationship between the project manager’s skills and competences and the success or failure of innovative projects. To achieve this purpose, we conduct a comparative case study analysis. In particular, we explore in detail the cases of two companies, which both operate in the electricity distribution market; the one belongs to the public sector while the other belongs to the private sector. In order to obtain more elaborated outcomes, in addition to the case study analysis, we employ the method of in-depth interviews with a number of project managers and employees working in the two companies under examination. The major findings of the empirical research show that the role of manager is substantially differentiated by environmental factors and thus the project manager appears occasionally to need certain context-specific skills and attributes in order to perform his tasks successfully.
