    • Early forest fire detection is one of the most critical factors in mitigating the environmental, economic, and broader societal impacts of wildfires. Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence, and particularly in Deep Learning techniques, have led to the development of highly effective automatic fire detection systems based on drone imagery, employing both Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Vision Transformer (ViT) architectures. Despite this progress, an important research question remains as to whether the fine-tuning process can consistently improve the performance of different deep learning architectures across different datasets.

The aim of this thesis is to perform a comparative evaluation of six state-of-the-art deep learning models (SigLIP2, SegFormer-B0, YOLOv26, EdBianchi ViT, Superflash41, and ConvNeXt) in both their pretrained and fine-tuned versions. The evaluation is conducted on three widely used fire detection datasets (FASDD, FLAME, and DFire) under a common experimental framework and identical training hyperparameters to ensure a fair and objective comparison of the results.

Model performance is assessed using quantitative evaluation metrics, including Accuracy, Precision, Recall, and F1-score, as well as Confusion Matrices. In addition, Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) techniques are employed to investigate the internal behavior of the models through t-SNE feature space visualization and Grad-CAM-based attention map analysis. The combined use of these evaluation approaches provides not only a quantitative assessment of model performance but also valuable insights into the internal feature representations and decision-making mechanisms of the examined architectures.

The experimental results demonstrate that the effectiveness of fine-tuning varies considerably across both model architectures and datasets. Models such as ConvNeXt and EdBianchi ViT exhibited substantial performance improvements following fine-tuning, whereas in other cases, including SegFormer-B0 and SigLIP2 on specific datasets, fine-tuning failed to produce comparable improvements or even degraded model performance. These findings indicate that the effectiveness of fine-tuning depends not only on the architectural characteristics of the model but also on the nature and structure of the training dataset. Consequently, the study highlights the importance of multifaceted model evaluation through the combined use of quantitative performance metrics and explainability techniques.
