This thesis investigates the role of semantics in the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and its contribution to the design and development of software systems. Although UML is the most widely used modeling standard in software engineering, the effectiveness of UML models depends not only on the correct use of syntax and notation but also on the accurate representation of the meaning of concepts, processes, and interactions. Semantic completeness is therefore considered a critical factor in ensuring the quality, consistency, and reliability of software models.
The theoretical part of the study presents the historical evolution of UML, the main categories of UML diagrams, the fundamental concepts and levels of semantics, and the most important formal approaches to semantic specification. Furthermore, the semantics of the main UML diagram types are analyzed, with particular emphasis on Use Case Diagrams, Activity Diagrams, Class Diagrams, and State Machine Diagrams. Common semantic errors and inconsistencies are also examined, along with methods for addressing them. In addition, the study explores the relationship between semantics and Model-Driven Engineering (MDE), highlighting the importance of semantic consistency in model transformation and automated code generation.
The theoretical framework is supported by two case studies conducted in educational and virtual laboratory environments. The first case study focuses on a LED control system implemented with Arduino Uno in the Tinkercad environment, while the second examines the Buoyancy Experiment based on Archimedes’ Principle in the Klett Book-App and Publior Virtual Lab environment. For each case study, UML Use Case Models and Activity Diagrams were developed and evaluated with respect to their semantic completeness.
The findings indicate that semantic documentation significantly improves the clarity, consistency, and overall quality of UML models, reducing the risk of misinterpretation and enhancing their suitability for software development and automation processes. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the combined use of different UML diagram types contributes to a more comprehensive representation of complex systems and educational procedures. Overall, the results confirm the crucial role of semantics in modern software modeling and emphasize its importance for achieving reliable and meaningful model-driven development.
