This thesis examines the development of astronomy as one of the most important mathematical sciences during the Byzantine period. The Byzantine Empire, which endured for more than a millennium (324–1453), faced numerous political, military, and social challenges. Despite these difficulties, and despite the widespread perception that often associates the Middle Ages with intellectual and scientific stagnation, Byzantium played a crucial role in the preservation, transmission, and advancement of scientific knowledge.
The study presents the position of astronomy within the framework of the mathematical sciences, with particular emphasis on its place in the Quadrivium of Byzantine education. It further explores the development of astronomical knowledge throughout the Early, Middle, and Late Byzantine periods, as well as the contribution of prominent scholars and astronomers to the formation and dissemination of scientific thought.
Special attention is given to the relationship between Byzantine astronomy and the ancient Greek scientific tradition, the influences it received from the Arabic-Persian scientific tradition, and the use of astronomical instruments and computational methods. Furthermore, the thesis examines the connection between astronomy and the Christian worldview, as well as its practical applications in areas such as timekeeping, calendar calculation, and the determination of the date of Easter.
Through the study of primary sources and the relevant scholarly literature, it is demonstrated that Byzantine astronomy was not merely a means of preserving ancient knowledge, but also contributed actively to the production of new scientific knowledge and to its transmission to both the medieval Islamic world and Western Europe. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of Byzantine scholars as intermediaries between different scientific traditions and on the intellectual exchanges that facilitated the circulation of astronomical knowledge across cultural boundaries.
The findings of this study highlight the significance of Byzantine astronomy within the broader history of science and demonstrate that Byzantium served as a vital link in the continuity of the scientific tradition from Antiquity to the Renaissance. Consequently, the Byzantine contribution to astronomy should be regarded not only as preservative but also as innovative, shaping the transmission and development of scientific knowledge for centuries.
