This study examines the effectiveness of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) as a sustainable approach to urban stormwater management in the context of increasing urbanization and the impacts of climate change. The continuous expansion of impervious surfaces, combined with the growing intensity and frequency of extreme precipitation events, has significantly disrupted the natural hydrological cycle. This disruption has led to increased surface runoff, diminished infiltration capacity, and an elevated risk of flooding in urban areas. These developments highlight the limitations of conventional “grey” infrastructure and emphasize the need for integrated, adaptive, and resilient management strategies.
Within this context, NBS emerge as a promising alternative or complementary approach. By harnessing natural and semi-natural processe - such as infiltration, retention, detention, and evapotranspiration - NBS contribute to the regulation of hydrological responses while simultaneously improving water quality. The primary aim of this study is to critically evaluate the contribution of NBS to flood risk mitigation and to systematically assess their performance across hydrological, environmental, and functional dimensions.
The methodological framework of the study is based on a comprehensive review of the international literature, the critical analysis of selected case studies, and the development of a multi-criteria evaluation framework. This framework incorporates key hydrological indicators, water quality parameters, and sustainability metrics. Particular emphasis is placed on parameters such as peak discharge attenuation, reduction of total runoff volume, extension of concentration time, and the capacity for pollutant retention and removal.
The findings indicate that Nature-Based Solutions can play a significant role in enhancing urban flood resilience and promoting sustainable stormwater management. In addition to their hydrological benefits, NBS provide a range of co-benefits, including the enhancement of urban biodiversity, the regulation of the urban microclimate, and the improvement of overall quality of life. However, their effectiveness is highly dependent on context-specific design considerations, appropriate selection and integration within existing infrastructure systems, and the implementation of long-term maintenance strategies. Therefore, the successful adoption of NBS requires their integration into comprehensive urban planning frameworks that prioritize sustainability, resilience, and multifunctionality.
