Professional tennis is a constantly increasing data-informed environment, where match statistics and KPIs support the decisions that were once primarily guided by experience and intuition. This dissertation investigates how the growing availability and use of data has influenced the performance and the strategic patterns in men’s professional tennis. In this view, analytics is treated as an information capability - it structures evidence, reduces uncertainty, and supports more consistent decision-making.

The study uses historical match data from the Jeff Sackmann ATP dataset, focusing on seasons with most broadly reliable match statistics. The central design choice is an era comparison between 1991–2005 and 2006–present. The year 2006 is used as a practical turning point because it aligns with the wider introduction of tracking and review technologies (e.g., Hawk-Eye), which increased the enhancement and credibility of tennis data and encouraged analytics-driven approaches at the professional level. While the dissertation is not measuring “analytics adoption” directly inside teams, it tests if the observable outputs of the game performance indicators and match characteristics shift meaningfully after this change in the sport’s data environment.

The analysis is organized into two parts. First, descriptive statistics make a summary on how key performance indicators evolve between eras and contexts (surface, tournament level, match format). Core measures include serve effectiveness (ace and double-fault rates), pressure-point performance (break-point save and conversion rates), return effectiveness, and match structure (tiebreak frequency). Distributional patterns are examined to better understand the behavior of tennis events and to support suitable inference.

Second, hypothesis testing (including t-tests, welch-test) evaluates whether the differences between eras are statistically significant and practically meaningful, reporting effect sizes alongside p-values.

Overall, the expected contribution is an evidence-based assessment of whether and how is the “data era” corresponding to measurable changes in performance and strategies in tennis.

Το επαγγελματικό τένις εξελίσσεται διαρκώς σε ένα όλο και πιο data‑informed περιβάλλον, όπου τα στατιστικά αγώνων και βασικοί δείκτες απόδοσης υποστηρίζουν αποφάσεις που παλαιότερα βασίζονταν κυρίως στην εμπειρία και τη διαίσθηση. Η συγκεκριμένη διατριβή ερευνά το πώς η όλο και περισσότερη αυξανόμενη διαθεσιμότητα και αξιοποίηση δεδομένων έχει επηρεάσει την απόδοση και τα στρατηγικά πρότυπα στο επαγγελματικό ανδρικό τένις. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, η ανάλυση δεδομένων δομεί την τεκμηρίωση, μειώνει την αβεβαιότητα και υποστηρίζει συνεπέστερη λήψη αποφάσεων.

Η μελέτη αξιοποιεί ιστορικά δεδομένα αγώνων από το σύνολο δεδομένων Jeff Sackmann ATP, με έμφαση στις περιόδους όπου τα διαθέσιμα στατιστικά αγώνων θεωρούνται έγκυρα και πιο αξιόπιστα. Ο σχεδιασμός έχει γίνει συγκρίνοντας δύο εποχές: 1991–2005 και 2006–σήμερα. Το έτος 2006 επιλέγεται ως πρακτικό σημείο καμπής, καθώς συμπίπτει με την εισαγωγή τεχνολογιών παρακολούθησης και επανεξέτασης (π.χ. Hawk‑Eye), οι οποίες ενίσχυσαν την αξιοπιστία των δεδομένων στο τένις και συνέβαλαν στην υιοθέτηση πιο σωστών προσεγγίσεων στο επαγγελματικό επίπεδο. Παρότι η διατριβή δεν μετρά άμεσα την «υιοθέτηση analytics» εντός των ομάδων, εξετάζει εάν τα παρατηρήσιμα αποτελέσματα του παιχνιδιού οι δείκτες απόδοσης και τα χαρακτηριστικά των αγώνων μεταβάλλονται ουσιαστικά μετά από αυτή τη μεταβολή στο περιβάλλον δεδομένων του αθλήματος.
