This study investigates major elements of the prose produced by Marios Hakkas, and concentrates on how post–World War II Greece publics suffering and the politics of that period show themselves through personal reaclations and gender identities as they are constructed by other people in their relationships with one another. The three collections of short stories (Enemy’ Rifleman, The Bidet and Other Stories, and the Commune) are being studied in order to develop a better understanding of how the author’s literary voice evolved from being socially realistic to one that expressed intensified existential fear.
The thesis aims to investigate the portrayal of male characters and female characters as independent individuals in short stories through a critical examination of their distinctive characteristics of individuality, the social and political conditions influence their relationships as well. The family and marriage are depicted as means of alienation, where consumerism and economic hardship undermine authentic communication and emotional connection between married couples.
The study also explores how Kaisariani is depicted in Hakkas's fiction, in relation to the political beliefs and experiences of the author (who was also affiliated with the Left). The study primarily concentrates on the evolution of the neighborhood of Kaisariani through time, as well as the way(s) this evolution is represented in the fictional world of the author.
The thesis aims to illuminate significant elements of literary identity for Marios Hakkas and to describe or elucidate characteristic elements of both his written works (artistic expressions) and his personality (individual identity) as formed or influenced by the experiences of a short but eventful life.
