This postgraduate dissertation explored mental-health challenges and psychological well-being among older adults living in a long-term care facility. The study adopted an exclusively qualitative methodological approach, using semi-structured interviews as the main data-collection technique and Atlas.ti for the thematic analysis of open-ended responses. The thematic analysis showed that life in the long-term care facility was interpreted through the coexistence of safety and loss of familiarity, care and restriction, social presence and loneliness. The central themes concerned the transition to institutional care, loneliness within co-presence, small everyday choices as expressions of dignity, meaning in later life, memory, self-acceptance and care relationships. The Discussion chapter indicated that person-centred care should move beyond physical safety and should actively support social connectedness, biographical continuity and recognition of the older person as a subject with history, preferences and voice. The dissertation contributes to a deeper qualitative understanding of ageing in long-term care and offers practice-oriented directions for psychosocial support.
