This dissertation examines the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the stock markets of the G20 using the event study method. An analysis of the abnormal returns of the days before and after the Russian attack presented evidence of  highly negative effects of the event on the stock market indexes. The results also showed that the days with the most significant losses were February 21^st and 24^th, 2022. After the separation of the G20 members into a NATO and a non- NATO group, their comparison suggested a difference in the reactions between those sets of countries. The members of the alliance showed an underestimation of the significance of the conflict, displaying a milder reaction than the non-NATO group on the event day, reevaluating, however, their estimations which led to significant negative abnormal returns on the last days of the event window. Nevertheless, the results of the cumulative average abnormal returns indicated that the NATO group suffered the highest aggregate losses from the event. On an analysis of the role that the Russian fossil fuel exports played on the stock market reactions of some countries on the news of the invasion, 11 members of the G20 were divided into “heavily dependent” and “less dependent” groups. The findings suggest that the countries which relied heavily on the Russian fuel to satisfy their domestic consumption reacted much more negatively than other, less dependent countries. Furthermore, even though both groups presented negative average abnormal returns on the event day, the group of the less reliant countries showed positive aggregate effects throughout the event window. For further research I suggest the investigation of the fossil fuel sector factor on the stock market reactions, using data from additional countries.

Αυτή η διατριβή εξετάζει την επίπτωση της Ρωσικής εισβολής στην Ουκρανία για τις αγορές μετοχών των G20, χρησιμοποιώντας την μέθοδο της μελέτης γεγονότος. Μία ανάλυση των μη τυπικών αποδόσεων των ημερών πριν και μετά την Ρωσική επίθεση παρουσίασαν στοιχεία πολύ αρνητικών επιπτώσεων του γεγονότος στους χρηματιστηριακούς δείκτες. Τα αποτελέσματα επίσης έδειξαν ότι οι ημέρες με τις πιο σημαντικές απώλειες ήταν η 21^η και η 24^η Φεβρουαρίου 2022. Ύστερα από τον διαχωρισμό των μελών των G20 σε ομάδες ΝΑΤΟ και εκτός-ΝΑΤΟ, η σύγκριση αυτών υποστήριξε την ύπαρξη διαφοράς μεταξύ των αντιδράσεων των δύο κατηγοριών. Τα μέλη της συμμαχίας παρουσίασαν μία υποτίμηση της σημασίας της διαμάχης, επιδεικνύοντας ηπιότερη αντίδραση από την ομάδα των εκτός-ΝΑΤΟ κατά την ημέρα του γεγονότος, αλλά  επανεκτίμησαν τις αντιλήψεις τους, οδηγώντας σε υψηλά αρνητικές μη τυπικές αποδόσεις κατά τις τελευταίες ημέρες της περιόδου γεγονότος. Παράλληλα, τα αποτελέσματα των σωρευτικών μέσων μη τυπικών αποδόσεων έδειξαν ότι η ομάδα χωρών του ΝΑΤΟ υπέστη τις πιο υψηλές συνολικές απώλειες από τη σύρραξη. Σε ανάλυση του ρόλου των Ρωσικών εξαγωγών ορυκτών καυσίμων στις χρηματιστηριακές αντιδράσεις χωρών κατά την  εισβολή, 11 από τα 20 μέλη των G20 διαχωρίστηκαν σε «υψηλά εξαρτημένες» και «λιγότερο εξαρτημένες».  Τα ευρήματα υπέδειξαν ότι οι χώρες που στηρίζονταν σημαντικά στα Ρωσικά καύσιμα αντέδρασαν πολύ πιο αρνητικά απ’ ότι οι υπόλοιπες χώρες της έρευνας. Ακόμη, παρόλο που αμφότερες οι ομάδες παρουσίασαν αρνητικές μέσες μη τυπικές αποδόσεις την ημέρα της εισβολής, οι λιγότερο εξαρτημένες χώρες εμφάνισαν θετικές συνολικές επιπτώσεις καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της περιόδου γεγονότος. Για περαιτέρω έρευνα, προτείνω την διερεύνηση του τομέα των ορυκτών καυσίμων ως παράγοντα των χρηματιστηριακών αντιδράσεων, χρησιμοποιώντας δεδομένα από περισσότερες χώρες.
