    • ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ Η παρούσα εργασία παρουσιάζει την δημόσια κοινωνική ζωή όπως αυτή διαμορφώθηκε σ’ ένα εμπορικό λιμάνι στις αρχές του 2ου αι. Παρουσιάζεται, η κοινωνική δραστηριότητα των κάτοικων της Ερμούπολης της Σύρου, ενός λιμανιού το οποίο για πολλές δεκαετίες ήταν ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά λιμάνια της Ελλάδας και της Μεσογείου. Μέσω της μελέτης άρθρων που αφορούσαν στη δημόσια κοινωνική ζωή των κάτοικων και δημοσιευόνταν τοπικές εφημερίδες. Ο σκοπός είναι να γίνει φανερό πώς η άρχουσα αστική τάξη που διαμορφώθηκε κυρίως λόγω των οικονομικών συνθηκών που επικρατούσαν , είχε μια πλούσια κοινωνική ζωή η οποία είχε διάφορες εκφάνσεις και πώς όλη αυτή η κοινωνικότητα επηρέαζε την ζωή των κατοίκων της Ερμούπολης.
    • ABSTRACT This project presents and analyzes the development and shaping of public social life in the early 20th century in a highly commercial harbor , located in the island of Syros. The discussion focuses around the social interactions , activities and encounters of the residence of Hermoupoli a place which for decades had been one of the most significant ports in the country and the entire Mediterranean Sea. Undertaking a secondary research study , the dissertation relies on articles and journals published in local newspapers at the time, in order to illustrate how social activities were unfolding, how community relations were developed and how, eventually , the social life was influencing the everyday lives of people in Hermoupoli. The purpose is to highlight the fact that the ruling urban class that was born out of the economic circumstances of the time , had I fact a very rich social life , with multiple facets which affected all other dimensions of their own lives.
