Transport has a crucial role in the economy of each country, as has a direct impact on products,
services to customers and citizens as passengers. The ongoing economic recession has a significant
impact on passengers transport, freight transport, transport infrastructure investment, but also on
environment, in several EU countries. Transport is currently responsible for the 1/3 of the final
energy consumption and total greenhouse gas emissions in Europe an one of the main emitters of
nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particles (PM10 & PM 2.5). The analysis examines the transport
performance (land, sea and air transport) in 15 EU countries between 1995 and 2013 (extended to
2015 if available).
