    • Cultural organizations of the 21st century accept various influences and challenges from the context in which they operate, such as academic libraries, which face similar challenges to which they must respond. One of the challenges they face is the "opening" towards a new category of users, the "print-disabled ones", a term referring to people who find it difficult to read printed material without help. In recent years, due to legislation favoring the admission of print-disabled people to higher education, a significant number of these people are enrolled in academic institutions. Academic libraries operating in a high-speed changing environment and exploiting the capabilities of new technologies try to expand their services to help this new category of users. «But the "opening" towards this category is not easy, as it requires the following: special knowledge, a study of ways to meet their needs, elimination of deeply-rooted prejudices in the behavior of academic librarians, knowledge of assistive technologies, enrichment of their collections in alternative material (braille books, talking books, big script writing, etc.), amendment of the relevant legislation and financial support from the state». Academic libraries are called upon to abolish the obstacles that prevent them from supporting the informational equality of all their users and to stand as "facilitators" towards this direction.
