The purpose of this study is to investigate the incoming tourism for fertility treatment in Greece and specifically the Fertility Center of Crete. The study aims to investigate: 1) the demographic characteristics of the "patients" who came from abroad to Greece for fertility therapy, 2) the type of fertility treatment they used and the effectiveness of it, 3) the encouraging factors that influenced the selection decision of foreigners to travel for fertility treatment in Greece, 4) between which other countries (besides their country of origin) considered the possibility of traveling for fertility treatment, 5) the main sources of information for travelers about health tourism in Greece- Crete, 6) the perceived quality of the service offered by assisted reproduction by the Fertility Center of Crete and 7) the type of tourist that distinguishes them.
The sample of the survey consisted of 60 women from abroad: Russia (26.7%), Italy (21.7%), the Netherlands (20%), France (10%), Germany (10%), Turkey (5%), United Kingdom (3.3%) and Hungary (3.3%). The majority of the sample aged 35-44 years (58.3%) and 25-34 years (21.7%). The survey data were collected using a structured questionnaire in May 2021.
Based on the self-report, the main types of treatment applied by women at the Fertility Center of Crete Greece were: in vitro fertilization (IVF) using their own eggs (43.3%), ovarian rejuvenation therapy (PRP) (33.3%), fertility treatment with sperm donation (21.7%). As for the factors that encouraged the sample to travel to Greece for fertility treatment were: high success rates (61.7%), positive feedback from others who have received fertility treatment in Greece (23.3%), the wide range treatment options (38.3%), ease of travel (35%) and 5) security provided by the country (38.3%). 80% of the sample did not think of another country for fertility treatment except Greece. Regarding the classification of the most important sources that the sample used for the fertility tourism research were: 1) the initial help of the patient's doctor or the specialist fertility doctor (40%), 2) the direct communication of the interested party with a clinic (36, 7%), 3) internet research for clinics (35%), 4) the opinion of those who had already traveled for fertility treatment in Greece and 5) information from a family member, friend or colleague who has passed the process in the past. The results showed that the sample agrees with the high quality of the services provided by the Fertility Center of Crete, and 75% of patients has effective treatment so they are very likely to recommend the Fertility Center of Crete to friends / relatives. Finally, it was found that 55% of patients stayed for fertility treatment in Greece for 8-14 days (55%) and during their treatment they also combined vacations in Crete.
Conclusion: The Fertility Center in Crete is famous for its high success rates, high patient satisfaction with the quality of services and the transmission of positive feedback from their experience to others. In addition, it is concluded that fertility tourism can contribute positively to the economic development of Crete and the tourism development of the country.
