    • Η ιλύς (ή λυματολάσπη) είναι το υλικό που προκύπτει από την διαδικασία επεξεργασίας των υγρών αστικών λυμάτων. Η εφαρμογή της ιλύος στα γεωργικά εδάφη ίσως να αποτελεί την πρακτικότερη, οικονομικότερη και πιο ρεαλιστική λύση, καθώς η διάθεση της ιλύος σε αυτά, αποτελεί πηγή των απαραίτητων θρεπτικών συστατικών, όπως άζωτο και φώσφορος για τα φυτά και αυξάνει σημαντικά τα επίπεδα της οργανικής ουσίας του εδάφους. Με την εφαρμογή της ιλύος στα εδάφη, το οργανικό άζωτο που περιέχει ανοργανοποιείται σε ανόργανο άζωτο (αμμωνιακή NH4+ και νιτρική NO3- μορφή), σε ρυθμούς που εξαρτώνται από σειρά παραγόντων, όπως είναι η υφή και το pH του εδάφους, η θερμοκρασία, η υγρασία και η διαδικασία σταθεροποίησης της ιλύος. Ο ρυθμός ανοργανοποίησης του οργανικού αζώτου της ιλύος, που εφαρμόζεται στα εδάφη της Θεσσαλίας, δεν είναι γνωστός, αν και η πληροφορία αυτή είναι απαραίτητη για τον υπολογισμό των ποσοτήτων διάθεσης της ιλύος στα εδάφη, προκειμένου να ικανοποιηθούν οι ανάγκες των φυτών για άζωτο αλλά και να αποφευχθούν αρνητικές συνέπειες, όπως είναι η ρύπανση υπόγειων και επιφανειακών νερών με νιτρικά άλατα.
    • The sewage sludge is the material that results from the process of treatment of wastewater urban sewage sludge. The application of sewage sludge in the agricultural soils constitutes the most practical, economical and realistic solution, as the disposal of sewage sludge in them, constitutes a source of essential nutritious components for the plants, such as nitrogen and phosphorus and increases considerably the levels of the organic substance of the soil. With the application of sewage sludge in the soil, the organic nitrogen that it contains is mineralized in inorganic nitrogen in rates that depend on some factors, which are the texture and the pH of the soil, the temperature, the humidity and the process of stabilization of the sewage sludge. The mineralization rate of the organic nitrogen of the sewage sludge, that is applied in the territories of Thessaly, is not acquainted yet, even if this information is essential for the calculation of the disposable quantities of the sewage sludge in the soil, in order to satisfy the needs of the plants for nitrogen, but also to avoid the negative consequences, such as the pollution of the underground and surface waters with nitric salts.
