    • Η παρούσα εργασία αποσκοπεί να καταδείξει πως η παγκόσμια οικονομική κρίση του 2008, η οποία είχε ως έναυσμα τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες Αμερικής, εξαπλώθηκε και στον υπόλοιπο ανεπτυγμένο κόσμο, ειδικά στην Ευρώπη, λόγω της παγκοσμιοποίησης και της άμεσης συνδεσιμότητας που η τελευταία επέφερε μεταξύ των οικονομιών των ανεπτυγμένων χωρών. Επίκεντρο της μελέτης είναι η περίπτωση της Κύπρου. Εξετάζεται ιστορικά η ανάπτυξη της οικονομίας του νησιού μετά την απόκτηση της ανεξαρτησίας του το 1960, η αναδιάρθρωση της οικονομίας μετά την Τουρκική εισβολή του 1974, καθώς και οι πρόσφατες ενέργειες για επανεκκίνηση της μετά το «κούρεμα» καταθέσεων και την απόφαση αναδιάρθωσης του Κυπριακού τραπεζικού συστήματος. Αναλύεται η πορεία από την ένταξη στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση (2004) και το Ευρώ (2008) και η άρρηκτη σύνδεση με την δυσχερή Ελληνική οικονομία η οποία επηρέασε καταλυτικά και την οικονομία του νησιού. Παρουσιάζονται τα αίτια που οδήγησαν στις δύσκολες αποφάσεις του Μαρτίου του 2013, καθώς και οι επιπτώσεις αυτών των αποφάσεων σε οικονομικό, πολιτικό και κοινωνικό επίπεδο. Τέλος, γίνεται αναφορά και στον τρόπο διαχείρισης της κρίσης σε διακρατικό επίπεδο από τους Ευρωπαϊκούς φορείς
    • The present thesis intends to demonstrate how the global economic crisis of 2008, which started in the United States of America, expanded in the rest of the developed world, particularly in Europe, due to the phenomenon of globalization and the direct connection that the latter brought forth between the economies of developed countries. The case of Cyprus lies at the centre of this study. The development of the island’s economy is examined from 1960 onwards, when Cyprus became an independent state, to its restructuring after the Turkish invasion in 1974, as well as the recent actions for a new star, following the deposits’ “haircut” and the decision to re-organize the Cypriot banking system. The course of the island’s entry in the European Union (2004) and to the Euro (2008) is also analysed along with its connection to the failing Greek economy, which played a catalytic role for its economy. The causes that led to the difficult decisions of March 2013 are presented as well as the consequences of those decisions on an economic, political and social level. Finally, the thesis comments on the way that the crisis was handled by European institutions on a supranational level.
