|Abstract:||Assessment is an integral part of education, as it determines whether its goals are being met. The impact of traditional testing on teaching and learning led to a shift to new assessment alternatives. Alternative assessment is compatible with contemporary theories of learning and humanistic psychology. However, concerns have been raised regarding issues of practicality and reliability. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and present the results of the use of an alternative assessment method in a classroom. More specifically, student portfolios were introduced and compiled as an alternative assessment method in an English as a Foreign Language context.
