|Abstract:||Financial analysis of the dairy sector The sector of milk and dairy products has a prominent position in the food industry as it includes some of the largest food industries in Greece. The dairy sector comprises a significant number of productive companies. The big dairy firms cover big part of the domestic demand in most product categories, as they allocate organized distribution channels and cover geographically the whole country. Furthermore, the productive sector includes also enterprises operating locally, in local markets and operates apart from the sector of milk in the sector of dairy products industry. Except for the companies that are activated in Greece, are become also imports of dairy products from other countries. The largest industries in the sector that control just about the entire market share are: 1. FAGE 2. DELTA – Vivartia 3. OLYMPOS 4. DANONE 5. KRI KRI 6. MEVGAL 7. Friesland Campina The competition that exists in the industry is very intense. The enterprises try via investments and innovations to make them be developed and strengthened. The economic crisis that affected all sectors of the Greek economy did not leave unaffected the dairy industry, however there are different consequences of the crisis on each individual company of the sector. Even in the environment of recession where the markets shrinks, some businesses remain profitable and with high returns, while others remain detrimental. The countries with the greatest milk production are Germany, France and United Kingdom. The dairy sector in our country, especially after the recent changes through the multiple bill of OECD, found gain in the limelight while it caused new war between the companies that are operating in this. The multiple bill of OECD regards the release of the time duration of pasteurized milk, not at all decreased the prices of products. The prices of milk were not decreased while the sector is loss-making and has high financial expenses. As milk producers have maintained their non-competitive prices, consumers turned to pasteurized milk (with more than 6 month duration), to private labels and furthermore in imported products in order to remain viable. The enterprises of the dairy sector are dependent on borrowing, while as we can see many times the borrowing far exceeds the annual profits.|
