Abstract: ABSTRACTThis project aims at looking into the way the two sexes are depicted in the Modern Greek Literature school text-book (ed. 2006) of the first grade of Greek Highschool (Gymnasio). It examines whether we reproduce inequality of the sexes in education by using the brought out models depicted in the specific anthology of texts. The study develops in a wider context of speculation and search of the ways the school text-books function as signallers of prejudices and stereotypes in the school classroom.The examination of the data was conducted via the thematic analysis of content method because it provides us with the potential of tracking the dormant message conveyed by the text. The text analysis is based on categories formed by the issues that arose while investigating these texts.The basic conclusion that this project comes to is that the Modern Greek Literature text-book of the first grade of Greek Highschool reproduces the stereotypical depiction of the two sexes. The sexes are mainly met in stereotypical roles while the presentation of their inter-relationships can be regarded as stereotypical as well. The man is presented as being dynamic in the social and the working field as he acts determinedly, he participates in the social acts and he provides solutions by intervening. He is dominant in the family domain since he is the one who works and supports his family. Moreover he plays the role of the pedagogue and he is also responsible for the recreation of his family. The woman is presented as being solely a mother and a housewife. She systematically deals with the housework and the meeting of the children's needs. She does not act socially and her presence in the working field is poor. The relationship between the two sexes is based on the primary role of the man while the woman is confined to being a sole listener. The presentation of the characters of the two sexes can be regarded as stereotypical as well.Apart from this stereotypical depiction of the two sexes in the texts, this anthology also establishes a differentiation as far as the traditional depiction of the two sexes is concerned. In the most recent texts of the school text-book the man is presented as deciding jointly with his family about matters having to do with its members; he employs the means of dialogue while communicating with the other members of his family and he isn't ashamed to express his emotions. The same thing happens with some female figures as well, figures who are presented as being dynamic, having their own point of view and claiming their own place in the world.Nevertheless, however positive this data may be, it cannot reverse the dominant stereotypical image of the two sexes. Thus, there is an emerging need for change as far as the planning of the text-books is concerned since they don't seem to assimilate the changes that have taken place in the working, the political, the social and the legal field regarding the equality of the two sexes.
